How to Approach a Logo Refresh

A logo is one of the most important parts of every brand. However, not all logos can be timeless and classic as those of Nike, Apple, and Samsung. Even if yours has been relevant and impactful for years, there may come a point at which you may want to give your design a makeover.

If your company logo has started to look outdated and uninspiring, then the following are some of the things that you can do to breathe life into it once again:

1. Change the Font

Just like fashion, trends in fonts change with time. So, one of the simplest but also the most effective things that you can do for your logo’s redesigning is to change the font with one that’s fresh and new. You can find many good typography examples online that you can review and experiment with. However, try not to pick one that’s vastly different from what you are using today as that can transform the entire brand which is something you don’t want unless you are feeling particularly brave.

2. Lose the Font Altogether

One of the things that you have to consider to know when it’s time for a logo redesign is the complexity of your logo. If the design is too complicated, then it needs an update, and one of the ways you can do that is by removing the font from the design itself. This technique has been used by many top brands in the past including Apple, Shell, and McDonald’s, which is why there is no reason why it won’t work for you as well.

3. Use a Different Color Palette

Just like fonts, colors also play a big role in logo design. This is because there is actual science behind the colors you use and each color says something about your company.

It’s possible that the color scheme that you originally started with has started to lose its charm and impact.  In that case, you can just switch the colors to give the logo a fresh new look. You don’t even have to work too hard to find unique and attractive color combinations as there are tools like Coolors that can help with that. It’s an online tool that can provide you with groups of complementary colors at the press of a button!

4. Look for Inspiration

You can get tons of ideas for your logo by checking those of others, including your rivals. There is a slew of websites on the Internet where you can find all kinds of logo designs for different businesses and industries. If that’s not enough, then you can also use a decent logo maker to experiment with different ideas and concepts in real-time. There are plenty of options in these on the Internet and many of them are completely free too.

5. Make it Simpler

There are many things that can make your logo design complicated. For instance, if you are using more than 3-4 colors or fonts, or using different kinds of design assets in the same logo, then it can dilute the overall impact of the design.

A powerful logo is always simple and easy to remember. So, be sure to take a good look at yours and see if it can be simplified further. If there is scope, then by all means, go for it.

Branding is what that differentiates small and generic businesses from the big ones. However, brands are also built upon a unique brand voice, identity, and of course- logo. So, make sure that you review your company’s logo from time to time and make appropriate changes to keep it fresh and effective.
